Thanks to the combined efforts of the National Surface Treatment Center, the Sher-
win-Williams Company, and three respected LED flashlight manufacturers, exciting
new products have been developed that provide for efficient and effective visual in-
spection of epoxy coatings for critical wet-surface marine or industrial applications.
Flashlights Unlimited and Elcometer, Inc.  joined forces with the top-name flashlight
makers to develop and market these remarkable new special-purpose instruments.

Sherwin-Williams Industrial & Marine Coatings offers the new Duraplate^® UHS epoxy
coatings, with blue fluorescing Optically Active Pigment for visual integrity inspection.
When inspecting a fluorescent base coat, pinholes and holidays will appear as black
within the blue fluorescent coating.  When inspecting a non-fluorescent top coat over
a fluorescent base coat, pinholes and holidays will fluoresce a bright blue color within
the otherwise non-luminous finish coating.  Viewing with low-cost yellow filter glasses
blocks the reflected purple glare from the light source, and dramatically improves the
contrast during visual  inspections of coating integrity.  The minimal capital costs, low
operating expenses, and outstanding area coverage efficiencies of fluorescent visual
inspection make this a desirable alternative to other coating integrity testing methods.

Sherwin-Williams offers several different OAP coatings, with blue or pale gold finish
colors, and all of these work excellently with the same fluorescent inspection method.
Your Sherwin-Williams representative  can assist you with selecting the best combi-
nation of primers and topcoats  for your particular marine or wet-surface application.
Other respected coatings manufacturers  are also developing  new products for this
emerging technology.  And we expect that additional applications will arise for which
fluorescent visual inspections that have been conventionally accomplished with Ultra-
Violet light sources can be adjusted to work with less hazardous purple wavelengths.

The latest generation of LED inspection lights provide narrow-bandwidth output that
peaks near the far purple end  of the visible light spectrum.  This purple light is much
safer for the eyes and skin  than conventional ultraviolet fluorescence sources, and it
can reduce the risk of eventual vision injury with frequent or long-term use of the light.
The 405nm and 410nm peak wavelengths of our Deep Purple series flashlights and
lanterns are above  the 400nm UltraViolet boundary,  providing optimum user safety.

     INOVA X5 Deep Purple Flashlight

The new eye-safe Inova X5 Deep Purple flashlights have been specifically designed

ASTM Active Standard # E2501-07  for inspection lights for this specific application.

     FU-405B Deep Purple Battery-Operated Flashlight

     FU-405R Deep Purple Rechargeable Flashlight    

In its battery operated version, the FU-405 will deliver up to six hours of continuous use
from just two readily-available CR123A batteries.  Our rechargeable version uses one
type 18650 lithium ion power source, and cuts the operating cost to just pennies a day.
With the rechargeable package, we include two of the 18650 batteries, and a charger
system that will run from both 120VAC linepower and 12VDC automotive lighter outlet
sources.  You can swap the flashlight battery in less than a minute, and run inspections
for many hours.  The dual-slot charger cradle manages individual recharging  of 1 or 2
batteries at a time.  You can purchase the battery operated model for well under $100,
and add the rechargeable batteries and charger system in the future if usage demand
increases.  No other fluorescent inspection torch can do so much, at this very low cost.

     XE-410S Deep Purple Standard Rechargeable Lantern    

For inspection of larger surface areas, or when a longer beam throw is required, the
new Xenopus Electronix 410 lantern is appropriate.  This high-power hand-held unit
has eighty bright purple LED's, driven by sophisticated regulation circuitry, powered
by a sealed rechargeable battery.  Both AC and DC charging adapters are included.
The broad coverage area of this large format lantern allows expansive surfaces such
as vessel hulls and fluid tanks to be inspected with remarkable speed and ease. The
lantern even has an individually switched white secondary LED, to help you navigate
safely in dark areas or read engineering documents without taking an extra flashlight.

     XE-405P Deep Purple Premium Rechargeable Lantern    

We have just released our latest Deep Purple lantern.  The new model is identical in
size and shape to our Xenopus Electronix 410 Standard lantern.  But the enhanced
XE-405 Deep Purple Premium lantern utilizes seven 1-Watt 405nm high-flux LEDs,
and delivers a more concentrated beam.  The new Premium model also has a high-
energy lithium ion battery system, resulting in double the original runtime (over three
hours per charge) and much shorter recharge time.  The performance improvement
of the new Deep Purple Premium lantern provides rapid payback of the higher cost,
by doubling duty cycles, and reducing the number of lanterns needed for larger jobs.

Please note that the effective beam ranges indicated for these flashlights are rough
estimates, and based upon use in a totally dark area.  Any substantial ambient light
will dramatically reduce the range and usefulness of fluorescent inspection methods.
Results also vary with atmospheric conditions  (moisture, particulate size & density).
Also note that regardless of beam throw, an inspector may not be able to detect tiny
pinhole defects at significant distances without some means of vision enhancement.

Depending upon specific details of the individual applications, such as surface areas
and shape complexities, it may be appropriate to employ both hand torches (for tight
corners and angular shapes) and lanterns (for rapid coverage of large surface areas).

Announcements

Lantern Availability Alert!  Vector Manufacturing, makers of the lantern bodies used
in our XE-410 (80-LED) and XE-405 (7-LED high-flux) inspection lanterns, has just
recently discontinued production of their  Tuff-Brite  series lanterns.  As a result, we
are currently unable to ship either of the two large-area lantern products (XE-410 or
XE-405).  We are in process of redesigning these two products into a new housing,
which will have a different form factor than the previous models.  This requires com-
plete reworking of the proprietary circuit boards and other components.  We expect
to resume delivery of our large-area lantern products 2nd quarter 2010, but the new
lanterns will be differently shaped, and all will operate with 405nm peak wavelength.
We sincerely apologize for this temporary availability problem, we did not have any
forewarning of Vector's sudden decision to discontinue its Tuff-Brite lantern bodies.

International Power Adapters!  The rechargeable version of our new FU-405 flash-
light includes an ungrounded, non-polarized AC power cord for the battery charger.
The plug fits most 120VAC outlets in the USA, Canada, and Japan.  However, the
battery charger itself can operate from either 120VAC/60Hz or 240VAC/50Hz line
power sources.  We now offer inexpensive adapter plugs, so that you can plug the
lithium ion battery charger into AC power outlets across most of the globe.  Check

The typical order turnaround interval is 1 to 2 business days, depending on products.
