Thanks to the combined efforts of the National Surface Treatment Center, the Sher-
win-Williams Company, and three respected LED flashlight manufacturers, exciting
new products have been developed that provide for efficient and effective visual in-
spection of epoxy coatings for critical wet-surface marine or industrial applications.
Flashlights Unlimited and Elcometer, Inc.  joined forces with the top-name flashlight
makers to develop and market these remarkable new special-purpose instruments.

Sherwin-Williams Industrial & Marine Coatings offers the new Duraplate^® UHS epoxy
coatings, with blue fluorescing Optically Active Pigment for visual integrity inspection.
When inspecting a fluorescent base coat, pinholes and holidays will appear as black
within the blue fluorescent coating.  When inspecting a non-fluorescent top coat over
a fluorescent base coat, pinholes and holidays will fluoresce a bright blue color within
the dark coating.  Use yellow filter glasses to improve contrast  for visual inspections.

The latest generation of LED inspection lights provide narrow-bandwidth output that
peaks near the far purple end  of the visible light spectrum.  This purple light is much
safer for the eyes and skin  than conventional ultraviolet fluorescence sources, and it
can reduce the risk of eventual vision injury with frequent or long-term use of the light.

Solutions

The new eye-safe Inova X5 Deep Purple flashlights have been specifically designed
for inspecting applications of the latest  Blue OAP  coatings from Sherwin-Williams^®.
These flashlights comply with criteria of published ASTM Active Standard E2501-06.
This is the perfect small light source for close-up inspections of area coating integrity.

For inspection of larger surface areas, or when a longer beam throw is required, the
new Xenopus Electronix 410 lantern is appropriate.  This high-power hand-held unit
has eighty bright purple LED's, driven by sophisticated regulation circuitry, powered
by a sealed rechargeable battery.  Both AC and DC charging adapters are included.

We are pleased to announce that we have made arrangements with  Elcometer, Inc.
to provide their excellent new model 260 Surefire^® Fluorescenator pinhole & holiday
inspection flashlight.  Made exclusively for them by Surefire^®, the Elcometer 260 has
a blazing six-Watt purple LED matrix, in a compact and ultra-rugged aluminum body. 

Please note that the effective beam ranges indicated for these flashlights are rough
estimates, and based upon use in a totally dark area.  Any substantial ambient light
will dramatically reduce the range and usefulness of fluorescent inspection methods.
Results also vary with atmospheric conditions  (moisture, particulate size & density).
Also note that regardless of beam throw, an inspector may not be able to detect tiny
pinhole defects at significant distances without some means of vision enhancement.
